Melkwegbridge – unusual bridge, designed by experts from the architectural studio NEXT Architectsk in Purmerend (Netherlands). The structure is part of a master plan for De Kanaalsprong and connects historic center with new district.
The most expressive part of the structure is the massive arch, which reaches a height of 12 meters above the water and is in continuous communication with Melkweg-road.
Pedestrian bridge weighing 85 tons, is composed of 130 items and is supported by a steel arch. The bridge is a walking bridge, and that is why given only to pedestrians and cyclists with the division into parts for both. In this cycle route is about 100 meters, and a pedestrian path, located on the arch, is the shortest crossing of the river and is 48 meters.
Architecture of a walking bridge allows to save the spatial openness of channel and its outskirts. Both sections(pedestrian and bicycle) fluently pass to each other and form single unit. Visual unity increases continuity of materials and colors.
Light-emitting-diode lines following the contours of structure and providing a wonderful kind on a bridge even after setting of sun are integrated in the edges of bridge.
